“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” - Martha Graham

Having danced and taught for more than seventy years, no one knew or loved dance more than Martha Graham. If you haven’t heard of her, we encourage you to do some research about her life. Ms. Graham was an American dancer and choreographer and even created her own style, the Graham technique, which completely changed the modern American dance world.

This quote of hers is one of our favorites. One of the things that makes dancing so special is the way that dancers are able to express their emotions without even muttering a single word. It doesn’t matter if your dance partner doesn’t speak the same language as you since you are both able to communicate through your movements. It truly is the hidden language of the soul.

“Why walk when you can dance?” - Ellen Van Dam

This life is just too dang short not to make every moment count and live your best life! Dancing is a quick and easy way to brighten up your day and put a smile on your face. Now, we aren’t saying that you should dance everywhere that you go (but we won't judge you if you did!), but walking is just so bland and boring! Next time you’re going for a stroll, perform a couple of moves! We promise that it will cheer you right up.

“The job of feet is walking, but their hobby is dancing.” - Amit Kalantri

Here is another quote about walking vs. dancing from the author Amit Kalantri. Sure, you have to walk to get from point A to point B, it’s just practical. But your feet and your body truly enjoy dancing as a hobby!

“Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance.” - Oprah Winfrey

Obviously, the legendary Oprah needs no introduction, and if you’ve ever seen her show you know that she’s a fan of making the most of your life, every single day. Especially during difficult times, you need to remind yourself to put the stress behind you, if only for a moment, take a breath and express yourself through dance.

“Any kind of dancing is better than no dancing at all.” - Lynda Barr

Can you imagine a Footloose type of world where dancing is not allowed? It would certainly be a bleak and depressing place to live! Dance brings so much joy to so many people. Not only to the ones that are dancing but those watching as well.

“When you dance, you can enjoy the luxury of being you.” - Paulo Coelho

Is there anything more freeing than dancing? We don’t think so. As you have heard, it’s great to dance like no one is watching, and that’s because when you do, you can be your true self without trying to change for those around you.

“I always work hard to find a way to disconnect from the thinking until it becomes second nature to me because that’s where you find the best moments. Dancing is like that for me all the time. It makes me feel free.” - Jennifer Lopez

While she is incredibly talented in multiple ways, did you know that Jennifer Lopez started her career as a dancer on the show In Living Color? This quote really hits the nail on the head and reminds us to not overthink things and let the emotions take over. Dancing is one of the most freeing activities that you can do.

“We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Now, it’s a little bit difficult to believe that the German philosopher was a stellar dancer, but that is one of the greatest things about dance! It doesn’t matter if you are a trained dancer or you just like to groove to a beat, everybody can enjoy dancing! So remember to take some time every single day to bust out some of your moves.

“Dance is the timeless interpretation of life.” - Shah Asad Rizvi

To prove just how true this statement is, Shah Asad Rizvi was a poet — in the 17th century! Dance really is timeless and has been enjoyed by mankind since our beginning. We are able to show so many emotions and tell stories without having to use any words. It is storytelling at its finest.

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.” - Martha Graham

We figured it would be appropriate to not only begin this dance blog with a quote from Martha Graham, but to finish off with one as well! As all of us dancers know, it can be pretty intimidating performing in front of an audience or auditioning for a part. It’s nearly impossible not to be nervous and hope that they will enjoy your dancing. But overthinking your choreography and wondering what the people who are watching you think is a surefire way to get in your own head and make a mistake.

This quote is a great reminder to all of us to get over our fears or reservations and just get up and dance. There is a reason that you spend so much time practicing your routines, going to dance class, reading dance blogs like this — you’re passionate about dance! So let that passion take over and do what you love without worrying about what others think.

We hope that these quotes helped inspire you to dance!
