Do you really know what goes on in the Latin dance world?
If the answer is NO...don't fret. We are giving the inside scoop on 10 things you didn't know about Latin Dancers, through the eyes of a Latin Dancer, Zaila.
1. We are probably some of the most dedicated dancers in the world. The Latin world is so different to any other genre, so a lot of ballet, modern etc dancers tend to discount us, but in reality, we work just as hard- we just tend to fall behind the scenes unless you're actively involved.
2. We are all really strong. Partner work makes your arms and core solid, and dancing six hours a day in heels is bound to strengthen your ankles, even without conditioning.
3. Most of us take ballet classes or have done previously. A weekly ballet class is a regular part of a Latin dancer's conditioning routine. It helps with posture, strength, lines, and fluidity, all of which are needed in Latin.
4. We are fiercely competitive because latin competition forces you to be.
5. Our feet are seriously messed up. We dance in heels. It really hurts.
6. In partnerships, we really trust each other. When you're getting thrown around horizontally on the floor in a roundabout, you kind of have to.v
7. We absolutely cannot deal with dance world politics. It's bad in the Latin world--judges are rarely fair.
8. We are the clumsiest people you will ever meet. We save all our coordination for the floor.
9. We are really brave. Referencing back to roundabouts, or any other trick.
10. We absolutely love what we do, despite everything, it's our world.
