9 Things I Wish I Knew Before Getting Into Dance
After dancing for several years, there have DEFINITELY been a few things I wish I knew before getting into dance that would have helped me progress so much.
- You have to stretch outside of dance class.

Ever wonder why all your peers are so flexible in dance class? They are stretching almost everyday. While stretching everyday might not get you to splits tomorrow, it will improve your flexibility so much.
- Engage your core.

Learning to engage your core is SO important in dance, no matter what style you’re taking.
- Dancing is not just competitions.

There are so many ways to dance. Yes, you can compete in competitions, but you can also perform at special events. There are so many dance teams and ballets out there to be a part of.
- Hairspray and bobby pins are your best friend

Hairspray and bobby pins are so good at holding back your hair during recital and other performances. You do not realize how many fly aways you have until you have a performance.
- Practice makes perfect.

Just like with flexibility, you are not going to be able to perfect every dance move over night. Dance is a lot of hard work, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort, you can become an amazing dancer.
- Ballet helps in other fields.

Did you know some football players take ballet? Ballet helps strengthen balance and core, which can be applied in any sport. Balance and core strength are also good skills to have in general.
- Learn how to memorize choreography fast.

While some dance teachers have the patience to practice a dance combo the entire class, others only want to go over the combo a couple of times. Learning to memorize choreography quickly will certainly benefit you in the dance world.
- Be even on both sides.

From my experience, some dancers I have taken class with are only good on one side, their dominant side. You will surely be ahead of the game if you can do good turns on the right, as well as the left.
- Flip the combo for the other side.

Remember earlier when I said to memorize choreography fast and be even on both sides? Typically, teachers teach the combo on the right, then after you go across the floor, you are expected to flip it and do it on the left.
