Dance Student Spotlight: Sophia Van Haastrecht

My name is Sophia Van Haastrecht, 8, and I live in Oakville, Ontario. I dance at Canadian Dance Company.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

I started dancing at the age of 4. I became a competitive dancer and gymnast.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

I think that Dance and Acro can be hard at times. You definitely have to keep training and working on your skills on a daily basis to get better.

How do you conquer negative talk?

I always try not to listen to what is said around me and focus on the journey ahead.

I would love to get into acting.
