As summer quickly comes to an end, a new season of dance is about to begin. In the spirit of having your best dance year yet, here are 10 ways to start off the new season right.
Schedule
Have you signed up for classes yet? If not, find out when your studio has registration. Once you have signed up, it is time to create a schedule for yourself. In your schedule, include time for school, dance, work, and other important activities. Having a schedule will not only keep you organized, it will also help reduce stress caused by a new routine.
Pro-tip: Print off multiple schedules and laminate them using shipping tape. Store a schedule in your backpack, dance bag, and even in the car.
Mark Your Calendar
A new season means tons of new and exciting events. Pull out your calendar and mark down all of those events. From community performances to competitions, put down EVERYTHING.
Clean & Refresh
Dust off your dance shoes and sort through your leos. Sometimes to start affresh, it is best to freshen up your wardrobe. Go through your dance clothes and pick out any leos that no longer fit or you have not worn in a while. Also, go through your tights and shoes and get rid of any unwanted worn and torn items.
Pro-tip: Sell your old leotards through Poshmark or Facebook Marketplace, and use the profits to buy yourself new dance attire.
Review Last Year
Sometimes to move forward, you must look back. Go through any journals, goal lists, and videos. Reflect on your previous dance year. What were the best parts? Did you reach all your goals? Is there anything that you wish went differently? What were your biggest accomplishments? Write down some of your reflections and begin thinking about what you want to accomplish next year.
Get Inspired
Get excited for a new season by finding some new inspiration. Whether it is through dance videos or magazines, find pictures and performances that fire your passion.
Pro-tip: Let the inspiration last all year long by creating a mood board. Cut out pictures of your favorite dancers and collage them together along with colorful papers and textures.
Set Goals
One of the best ways to prepare for a new year of dance is by writing out a set of goals. We suggest using a 3-by-3-by-3 pattern when writing your goal list. First, pickout three goals that you would like to accomplish within the first month of dance. Second, write three goals that you want to complete halfway through the year. Finally, select three goals that you want to accomplish by the end of the year.
Prepare Your Body
If you have not been busy dancing all summer long- no worries-everyone needs a break. Get ready to start dancing again by stretching and working on strength a few weeks before classes begin.
Reconnect With Friends
Missing your dance family? Reconnect with your dance friends before classes begin and catch-up. Not only is it exciting to hear what everyone was up to this summer, but when classes begin you won’t feel tempted to catch-up during class.
Update Portfolio
Planning on auditioning this season? Get ahead of the game by updating your portfolio before the season begins. Do you have an updated headshot? Will you need to film new technique videos? Could your résumé be refreshed?
Ease In
When you start classes again, be easy on yourself. Love and respect your body during that moment and don’t overly push yourself. Where you ended last season will not always be where you pick-up the next season. Remember that everyone around you is experiencing a similar feeling and that it will go away with time. Also, remember that you are awesome and deserve an amazing season.
